چکیده

We consider a system coupling the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations to the Vlasov– Fokker–Planck equation. Such a problem arises in the description of particulate flows. We design a numerical scheme to simulate the behavior of the system. This scheme is asymptotic-preserving, thus efficient in both the kinetic and hydrodynamic regimes. It has a numerical stability condition controlled by the non-stiff convection operator, with an implicit treatment of the stiff drag term and the Fokker-Planck operator. Yet, consistent to a standard asymptotic-preserving Fokker-Planck solver or an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver, only the conjugate–gradient method and fast Poission and Helmholtz solvers are needed. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and asymptotic behavior of the schemes, with several interesting applications.

Asymptotic - Preserving schemes for kinetic – fluid modeling of disperse two - phase flows with variable fluid density ∗

We are concerned with a coupled system describing the interaction between suspended particles and a dense fluid. The particles are modeled by a kinetic equation of Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type, and the fluid is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with variable density. The systems are coupled through drag forces. High friction regimes lead to a purely hydrodynamic description of ...

A Fluid-Kinetic Model for Particulate Flows with Coagulation and Breakup: Stationary Solutions, Stability, and Hydrodynamic Regimes

We consider coupled models for particulate flows, where the disperse phase is made of particles subject to size variations. We are thus led to kinetic equations with coagulation and breakup operators, coupled to fluid mechanics equations. We discuss the existence and stability of stationary solutions. We also derive macroscopic models through asymptotic hydrodynamic regimes, once relevant scali...

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory

This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...

An Asymptotic Preserving Scheme for the Diffusive Limit of Kinetic Systems for Chemotaxis

In this work we numerically study the diffusive limit of run & tumble kinetic models for cell motion due to chemotaxis by means of asymptotic preserving schemes. It is well-known that the diffusive limit of these models leads to the classical Patlak-Keller-Segel macroscopic model for chemotaxis. We will show that the proposed scheme is able to accurately approximate the solutions before blow-up...
